New Emergency General Surgery Service
Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust has recently introduced a weekday dedicated Emergency General Surgery service at St Thomas’ Hospital. The aim is to decrease patient waiting times and facilitate earlier General Surgery consultant review, and therefore enhance efficient diagnosis and treatment.
To achieve this we have an ambulatory Emergency General Surgery ‘Hot’ clinic weekday mornings for patients (18+ years old) with urgent general surgery problems. The team is also available to see patients referred directly from a GP in the Surgical Assessment Unit without waiting in the Emergency Department, outside of the hot clinic times.
Typical issues that we can review in the hot clinic:
- Abscesses - perianal / pilonidal / torso
- Right iliac fossa pain
- Right upper quadrant pain
- Obstructed jaundice
- Small volume rectal bleed
- Painful not obstructed hernia
- Mild diverticulitis
- Wound problems
- Post-operative problems
