Chris Newman takes up CCG Practice Management Lead role
Chris Newman has been the practice manager at the Clapham Park Group Practice for the last three years and in January he will also become Practice Management Lead for NHS Lambeth CCG, devoting three days per month to the role. He joined the NHS seven years ago after working in the retail sector, attracted by the chance of more rewarding work and providing good patient care.
Chris is impressed with the quality of practice management in Lambeth and he wants to do all he can to support and develop the profession. “I think it’s important to promote the role of practice managers (PMs) within the CCG, across NHS England and the NHS more generally,” he says. “It is a difficult role and there needs to be support for PMs so that we have a voice. I hope I can provide that. It’s a challenging environment to be working in – for example, dealing with CQC inspections.”
In particular, Chris is hoping to develop more formal training for practice managers and other non-clinical staff at GP surgeries that will help people to thrive in their roles. It’s an area where he feels there is a gap. He plans to work with the Community Education Provider Network in areas such as IT and customer service skills, and for PMs’ training in human resources matters and leadership.
Alongside his new job he will need lots of support in 2017 when he will run his first London Marathon in support of Breast Cancer Care.
