Call for Antibiotic Guardians

World Antibiotic Awareness Week commences on Monday 14 November and European Antibiotic Awareness Day is on Friday 18 November.

The CCG will be distributing materials developed by Public Health England - their Antibiotic Guardian campaign promotes appropriate use of antibiotics by patients. Leaflets and posters will be sent out to practices and pharmacies. We are also aiming for coverage in Lambeth Talk, the Love Lambeth blog page, and the Dr Know column in Lambeth Weekender and we will use Twitter to convey key messages.

Public Health England is calling for GPs to support the campaigns by registering as an Antibiotic Guardian.

As you are aware, one of the greatest threats we face globally is that resistance to existing antibiotics is increasing. The UK Independent Review on antimicrobial resistance, led by Lord Jim O’Neill and published in May highlighted that unless we act to tackle this issue now, by 2050 there could be up to 10 million deaths and an economic cost of £66 trillion.

Ensuring that we protect the effectiveness of our existing antibiotics and engaging people in what they need to do to help remains a priority and World Antibiotic Awareness Week is a great opportunity to get that message across. Read the full letter from Public Health England here
