No Smoking Day – have you thought about giving up?


Wednesday 12 March marks No Smoking Day and is the perfect opportunity for smokers across Lambeth to set their goal and quit smoking.

No Smoking Day is supported by the British Heart Foundation and this year’s theme is entitled 'V for Victory' and shows that for many the fight to stop smoking can be a difficult one but one that they can ultimately win with the right support.

Everybody has their own personal reason for wanting to stop smoking. Some people quit as part of a larger lifestyle change - to be healthier, to get fit, or to save money. For some, it’s more about how their smoking affects the people around them – their family, friends, and little ones. Whatever your reason, thinking carefully about your own motivation and keeping a reminder in key places can really help to keep you going through the tough times.

Local GP Dr Adrian McLachlan said: “We all know smoking is bad for you, but it is easy to forget just how much damage it does. Smoking causes about 81 per cent of lung cancers in England and can give rise to cancer of the mouth, lips, and throat, as well as the bladder, kidney, liver and stomach. Smoking harms the lungs putting smokers at increased risk of chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and pneumonia. It also damages the heart and blood vessels – increasing the chance of a heart attack, stroke and circulation problems.”

He added: “Any day is a good day to stop smoking but No Smoking Day gives smokers another opportunity to try and quit. There are many local NHS services and schemes across Lambeth available all year round to give advice and support for people who want to stop smoking. Ask your pharmacist or GP about the best ways to go about quitting and the local NHS services available to you.

The Guy's and St Thomas' Stop Smoking service provide advice, support and encouragement to help you stop smoking for good. People who use the local stop smoking services service are four times more likely to stay smoke free, so why not go along to a session for advice about how you can quit smoking once and for all? NHS Stop Smoking Advisors will be able to give you lots of tips on ways to stop the inevitable cravings and how to stay on track, with a personal 'quit plan' that is tailored to your needs.
